A major issue of our time is the vast amount of plastic waste produced daily. While its durability has advantages, especially for certain packaging, improper disposal poses a threat to the environment. Plastic waste often finds its way into the oceans, endangering marine life, their habitats, and ultimately, the climate and humans.
We are seeking alternative materials that are sustainable or recyclable. Partnering with the organization #tide, we collect plastic from coastal areas before it reaches the sea. This plastic is then cleaned, shredded, and reused, creating the casing material for our D10 CHRONO SOLAR and our sustainable strap made from #tide ocean material®.
Plastic has become a global issue, particularly in areas where organized infrastructure is lacking, such as the oceans. The plasticbank initiative aims to stem the tide of plastic pollution while improving lives in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Locals can collect plastic and exchange it at collection points for money, food, or hygiene products. The collected Social Plastic is processed into raw material and reused.
Through our collaboration with ClimatePartner, we became aware of the Plastic Bank project and decided to support it. We chose to do so because the collectors are fairly compensated while simultaneously benefiting the environment and climate. The ocean acts as a buffer against climate change, storing a quarter of CO2 emissions and 93 percent of the greenhouse effect's heat. However, pollutants and waste disrupt this balancing function. Preventing waste from entering the ocean protects marine life, microorganisms, and the ocean's ability to mitigate climate change.
